Anônimo enviou uma ask:

Not to offend but why are so many trans people autistic?

Responder:

there’s a link between being autistic and gnc, which may lead to pressure to transition - autistic people already struggle with socializing/”fitting in” so they may be more vulnerable to pressure/shame about being gnc

conversely, troons love to claim that they have any mental condition that will give them an excuse not to seek employment, you’ve seen them many times with their mile-long self dx lists featured front and centre on their blogs lmao

transgenderism is a fringe movement, and people on the fringes of society sometimes sexually identify as autismal

the world is a strange place

Fuck you and fuck everyone who liked or reblogged this without critiquing it.  Y’all are so unbelievably ablest.

Hey anon, if you are looking for a real answer you deserve one.

OP has no idea what being autistic or being trans is, and that’s a poor start for answering questions that pertain to both.

I’m a scientist AND autistic.

I was diagnosed formally at 7 years, which is less common for people of color. Does this mean people of color are less likely to be autistic, or that maybe people of color are just less likely (for possibly many reasons), to get a diagnosis.

You see what I mean?

OP said there is a “link” between being trans and being autistic. That is incorrect. The correct term is there is a correlation. But it is unknown whether being trans and being autistic actually have anything to do with one another. It could be that because autistics are more aware of themself socially that they simply realize they are trans more often, or are more likely to come out.

Trans people are never “pressured” to exist, trans people naturally exist as part of gender diversity, and their lives are usually spent having their latent gender identity repressed by an unaccepting public. With this in mind, another theory is that even if there was some kind of biological cause and effect between being autistic and being trans - that would in no way be a surprise or a bad thing because scientists have understood there are complex biological roots to being trans or really any identity.

This Slate article discusses both these theories and links to a peer reviewed paper that is a review of the literature so far (ie: reseaech that has been done so far). For convienince I will also share the link to the paper here.

These are the take away points though from the article itself:

On top of all that, there IS evidence that a higher number of autistics go into STEM fields than allistics (non-autistics):

*NCBI peer reviewed paper

*Scientific American

*The Independent

The declaration autistic people are “stupid” is not only woefully crass and vile, but titanically WRONG.

And that’s where discussion of ableism comes in.

So! Contrary to what fearful people on the internet, and angry middle-aged men quoting 9th grade biology might lead you to believe - knowing actual science does not make you a jerk. Infact, in my own experience - scientists are almost universally some of the nicest and most hollistically well meaning people you will ever meet. In general, the pursuit of constantly asking questions, and constantly finding seemingly weird answers makes us appreciate the shee breathtaking amount of complex diversity life seems to offer on every level.

Being trans or being cis, being gay or being straight, being autistic or being allistic are all NATURAL and fascinating parts of our human world. So please never let anyone mislead you otherwise.
